Biarritz tourist information

where to go - what to see - what to do

Biarritz established itself as a popular coastal resort in the mid-19th century when Napolean III and his wife Eugenie used to spend their summers here.  Since then it has proved popular not only with royalty but also with Europe's rich and famous.

Biarritz has some of the best surf in the world and great beaches such as La Grande Plage which is dotted with striped bathing tents.  Don't forget to make for Pointe Atalaye where you'll come to the Rocher de la Vierge.  From here you'll be able to see north towards Les Landes and south to the mountains of Spain.

Also of interest is one of the last most sumptuous hotels in Europe, the Hotel du Palais built to accommodate Empress Eugenie and her entourage.  The Port de Pecheurs is the spot for boat trips out to sea and as you head out of the bay take a look back at the Byzantine and Moorish style Eglise Ste-Eugenie built in 1864 for Eugenie herself.
