Mont-de-Marsan tourist information

where to go - what to see - what to do

Mont-de-Marsan was founded by Pierre de Laubaner in 1133 at the confluence of the rivers Douze and Midou.  It became known as 'the city of rivers' and was an important commercial centre for grain and Armagnac wine.  Elegant 17th-century houses with wrought-iron railings are a testament to the town's former wealth.

Mont-de-Marsan still plays an important role in the prefecture of the Landes department.  It boasts a hippodrome and is well known for its poultry and foie-gras production.

During the summer season the town is given over to its favourite pastime, bullfighting.  Champions from France and Spain merge here with the 'course landaise' a tamer and less bloody version of more traditional bullfighting.
