Orthez tourist information

where to go - what to see - what to do

Orthez is a delightful medieval market town with many fine buildings situated around the old bridge or Pont Vieux which served as a vital crossing for pilgrims en route to St Jacques de Compostella.  Having survived the Wars of Religion the bridge is now a symbol of resistance and strength reflecting the character of the local people.

Orthez is known for its top-class market on Tuesdays where you'll see a plethora of foie-gras, Bayonne hams and other local delicacies.  Also not to be missed is the house of Jeanne d'Albret, mother of Henry IV, whose interest in the Protestant faith eventually drew Orthez and the surrounding region into the Wars of Religion (1562-93).
