Saint Jean de Luz tourist information

where to go - what to see - what to do

Saint Jean de Luz is a charmingly attractive resort with a distinct Basque identity.  In the 11th century its natural harbour gave rise to a thriving whaling industry.  Today Saint Jean de Luz is still an active port and important base for sardine, anchovy and tuna fishing.  This same harbour also protects the coastline making it one of the safest and most enjoyable areas for bathing along the Atlantic coast.

An absolute must is the Place Louis XIV near the harbour with its cafés, plane trees & relaxed atmosphere.  It was here that Louis IX stayed before marrying Marie Thérèse of Spain in 1660.  Leading to the beach on Rue de la République you'll find an array of restaurants catering for every taste and budget.  Don't forget to sample some of the local cusine such as 'chiprions' or squid cooked in their own ink and the delicious 'piperade' or omelette with peppers and ham.

Apart from that, Saint Jean de Luz oozes style and elegance with chic boutiques, sea-water spa centers and numerous art galleries.  For a taste of Basque culture, head to the Saint-Jean-de-Luz municipal Fronton [game wall] to see a demonstration of the traditional Basque game of Pelota.
