Clermont Ferrand tourist information

where to go - what to see - what to do

Clermont-Ferrand is the cultural and economic hub of the Massif Central and a lively, university town full of cafés, bars and restaurants.  It is the home of the Michelin tyre empire that branched out into producing guide books as a way of promoting motorcar tourism.

Originally it began as two separate, rival towns with the Counts of Auvergne intent on making Montferrand the central power base.  However, Montferrand was united with Clermont in 1630 to form one city that was built on the top of an extinct volcano.

You'll probably spend most of your time in the more ancient Clermont with its Musee Bargoin full of local Roman artefacts.  Place St-Pierre is also worth investigating for its daily food market as is the towering Cathedrale Notre-Dame built out of black lava brought from nearby quarries in Volvic.  However, don't overlook Montferrand with its fine 'hotels particuliers' or mansions that line Rue Keber and excellent fine arts museum.
