Quimper tourist information

where to go - what to see - what to do

Quimper derives its name from kempir, a breton word for 'confluence of two rivers', in this case the rivers Odet and Steir.

The powerful Duke of Cornwall was resident here making Quimper the ancient capital of Cornouaille.  The cultural and historical hub of Brittany, Quimper boasts diverse architecture ranging from its Gothic cathedral to the impressive granite bishop's palace and the picturesque 'hotels particuliers' or private 16th century mansions.

The old town lies to the west of the cathedral and is charming with its cobbled streets, half-timbered houses and friendly atmosphere.  This is the place to purchase traditional Breton lace and sample some of the local cuisine (crepes and cider).  Proud of its cultural heritage Quimper celebrates traditional Breton music, costumes and dance in the festival de Cornouaille which takes place between the third and fourth Sundays of July.

Quimper is also known for its hand-made faience pottery which favours traditional Breton designs edged by yellow and blue borders.

For a change of scenery, head to the river Odet known as one of the most beautiful rivers in France.  The banks between Quimper and Benodet are line with chateaux and chapels and provide opportunities for boat trips and fishing.
