Rennes tourist information

where to go - what to see - what to do

Rennes is a hugely attractive town which fuses architectural styles from Gallo Roman beginnings to a medieval cathedral quarter and elegant 16th-18th century bourgeois buildings.

When Brittany was united with the rest of France in 1532, Rennes was made regional capital and established itself as an important thoroughfare from Nantes and Le Mans to the northern and western ports.  In 1720 much of the city's splendour was destroyed in a fire.

However Rennes has managed to retain much of its early stature boasting two universities, an upbeat ambiance, high tech industry and an established cultural life.

Rennes comes alive in July with the 'Tombées de la Nuit' a festival of concerts, theatre and medieval costume parades.

The city is divided by the Vilaine river and it's the northern area that includes the pretty medieval streets around the Place des Lices.  Here you'll find half timbered houses, designer boutiques and chic bars & restaurants.

For a change of scenery hop on 'le Val' the driverless metro that takes you to the innovative 'Rennes Atalante' zone for a tour of the Citroen factory.
