Chartres tourist information

where to go - what to see - what to do

Chartres has possibly the most magnificent Gothic cathedral in Europe.  The stained-glass reflected on the interior stone of the cathedral is simply stunning with over 150 windows illustrating everyday life in the 13th century.  During both World Wars the glass was painstakingly removed from the windows for safekeeping.

Although the cathedral is a 'must-see' you should also not overlook the town's other churches.  The Benedictine abbey church of St-Pierre has its own charm again with some noteworthy stained-glass.

The historic centre is also well preserved with medieval houses lining rue Chantault.  The east bank of the river is also worth exploring along rue de la Foulerie where you'll find gardens, wash houses and tanneries - all vestiges of a once thriving riverside trade.
