Chaumont tourist information

where to go - what to see - what to do

Chaumont used to be home to the Counts of Champagne and was at the height of its glory in the 13th-century.  The Palais de Justice and the medieval castle keep are reminders of this lavish past.  However, the main building to head for is the Basilique St-Jean built in grey stone typical of most Champagne churches.  Inside you'll be able to appreciate turreted stairways, vaulted ceilings and an Arbre de Jesse in which all characters are dressed in the style of 16th-century Champagne.

Also of interest in Chaumont are the Renaissance town houses with protruding towers that house large spiral staircases.  Not too far from Chaumont lies Colombey-les-Deux-Eglises, birthplace of General de Gaulle and home to La Boisserie - a museum dedicated to life and work.
