Troyes tourist information

where to go - what to see - what to do

Troyes, once the ancient capital of Champagne, is a sheer delight!  The mayor of Troyes (housing minister under Giscard) should be applauded for his efforts to restore the historic centre and ban any new housing projects that may have spoiled what can only be described as a feast for the eyes.  The historic centre is graced with magnificent medieval and Renaissance houses, Gothic churches and 16th-century squares and is shaped like a champagne cork.

The city is famed for its stain-glass making and sausages (andouillettes).  It has also been a centre for hosiery and knitwear since the Middle Ages when Louis XII demanded that orphanages had to be self-financing.  The Hopital de la Trinité was the first institution to start making knitted stockings - a trade that was eventually adopted by other institutions.

Once you've exhausted the worthy museums and ancient churches head out to Lac et Foret d'Orient - a dense forest of marshes, lakes and nature reserves popular for activities such as water-skiing, sailing and fishing.
