Chateau de Bourdeilles kills two birds with one stone for it comprises a 13th century fortress and a 16th century Renaissance residence which was built by the lady of the castle Jacquette de Montbron in anticipation of the royal visit by Catherine de Medici. When the royal visit was cancelled all building work was stopped leaving the castle unfinished.
However, there is still much to admire here including the gilded salon on the first floor which Ambroise le Noble (of the Fontainebleu school) decorated. The castle is also home to a large collection of furniture with Spanish dowry chests, Catalan triptychs and a 16th century entombment with life-sized statues from the Rhineland.
