Chateau de Chaumont is a lot more military in style than some of the more well known and lavish Renaissance chateaux of the Loire. From the river you'll think that you are looking at a military stronghold as opposed to a castle designed for pleasure and court entertainment.

After the death of Henri II, it was Catherine de Medici who bought the castle forcing Diane de Poitiers to swap Chateau de Chenonceau for Chaumont which is more austere.

However, Diane de Poitiers rose to the challenge and continued much of the good work that was left incomplete by the death of Charles II. For example, it was at this time that the north wing was destroyed in order to clear the way for a view down to the river.

The gardens are well worth a visit with grandiose stables for horse enthusiasts.  Every year from mid June to mid October an International Garden Festival is held here with landscape gardeners proudly showing off their creations based on a different central theme each year.

Getting Here: Chaumont is 17km from Blois and accessible from the A10 motorway (exits Blois and Amboise). Regular trains also run from Tours and take approx. 30 minutes.
