The Chateau de Chinon will appeal to those interested in medieval fortresses and is perched high on top of a rocky promontory overlooking the river Vienne (with rather impressive views).

Although mostly ruined, the castle is the site where Joan of Arc spotted Charles VII disguised as a courtier and persuaded him to lend her an army in order to rise up in defence of France against an invading English army.  There are four or so rooms dedicated to France's favourite heroine although other parts of the castle remained largely unfurnished.

Getting Here: Chinon lies southwest of Tours and Azay-le-Rideau with trains and buses running from Tours and Azay on a regular basis.
