Chateau de Hautefort has a proud elegance not often seen in the coarse stone fortresses of the Dordogne.  It stands high above the feudal village and was built as a pleasure palace for King Louis XIII's secret lover Marie de Hautefort.

There is a stylish Renaissance courtyard which fronts an arcaded gallery and the gardens are laid out in terraces with superb views of the green rolling hills of northeast Perigord.

The village is also worth a detour as is the Musee Reve et Miniatures which houses a collection of doll houses in a different period styles (situated across the river from the Chateau).
