Chateau de Langeais is one of the oldest of the Loire Chateaux and was built largely as a fortified castle to protect the region from invasion from Brittany.  As you approach from the town side you'll be confronted with narrow, protective windows, a drawbridge and portcullis.

However, once inside the atmosphere changes and you'll think you've been transported to one of the other finer Renaissance chateaux of the Loire with large windows and fancy stonework at play.  It is here that popular son et lumiere shows are staged largely portraying the marriage of the Bretonne Anne de Bretagne with Charles VIII - a move that united Breton with the rest of France.

Getting Here: Langeais lies southwest of Tours and west of Villandry with trains running from Tours, Savonnieres and Saumur.
