Chateau de Puyguilhem is a fine Renaissance castle built on top of the foundations of a former military fortress.

This marvellous construction, completed in two stages, was the work of Mondot de Lamarthonie, personal advisor to Francois 1st who helped govern France during the King's absence during the war with Italy.

The first stage of construction was completed between 1513 and 1525 when the foundations, hexagonal tower and broad spiral staircase were built.  The second phase of construction between 1525 and 1535 saw the completion of the monument with its steep roof, sumptuous fireplaces and dormer style windows.

The castle was purchased by the state in 1939 having been abandoned and left to ruin for over 60 years.  Careful reconstruction has returned Puyguilhem to its former splendour.  From the gallery at the top of the stairs make sure you glance down to the view of the valley, once filled by a lake.
