Chateaux in Bas-Rhin

Many of the chateau-forts of the Bas-Rhin area served the same purpose.  Situated on the border of Alsace and Lorraine (Chateau de Haut-Koenigsbourg) they allowed inhabitants to easily observe and ward off invasion.  Conflict was common when Alsace belonged to the Germanic Holy Roman Empire (opposed by the Church).  So, the castles held political sway and protected the communication routes of the Rhine Valley.

Many of the Chateaux were also an expression of the considerable wealth of powerful local lords and boasted high quality interiors and private chapels such as Chateau de Kagenfels

Another common feature is that many of the chateaux of the Bas-Rhin adapted their windows or openings in the 15th-century to the use of artillery fire such as Chateau de Spesbourg
