Chateaux in Mayenne
The strategic position of Mayenne's many rivers and tributaries has played a huge role in the construction of its chateaux and fortresses.
Chateau de Laval, for example, is situated in a large valley occupied by the Laval river and Chateau de Craon is situated on a tributary of the Moselle (a strategic point between France and Germany). However, the construction of Mayenne's chateaux were often an expression of the power of local feudal lords such as the de Loge Lords who were responsible for Chateau du Bois Thibault.
In the 19th-century, defensive fortress cum castles gave way to sumptuous private residences. Chateau de Goue, for example, looks like a typical Breton manor more than a classical French chateau. So, all in all quite an eclectic mix!
