Lons-le-Saunier tourist information

where to go - what to see - what to do

Lons-le-Saunier is a picturesque thermal town set right in the heart of the Jura department.  It is rich in historical and cultural heritage.  It was the Romans who first exploited the thermal springs here renowned for their high salt content.  Not surprisingly they called the town 'Ledo Salinarius' or 'town of salt'!  Founded in 1892, the thermal spa is still in operation today and caters for almost every need from simple relaxation to complex health regimes.

Lons-le-Saunier's other claim to fame is Rouget de Lisle who composed a war song in 1792 for the army of the Rhine, later known as the French National Anthem or 'Marseillaise'.  There are reminders of Rouget de Lisle everywhere most notably in the statue designed by Bartholdi and the Musee Rouget de Lisle - a reconstruction of the composer's home.
