Dieppe tourist informationwhere to go - what to see - what to do
Dieppe is set between dramatic limestone cliffs which envelop its industrious port where fish is sold directly off the boats. In fact, fish is a good reason to come to Dieppe with sole, scallops, turbot and marmite (Dieppe's famous fish stew) all vying for your attention in the many fish restaurants.
Dieppe's seafaring history is an interesting one - the port developed its wealth when Jehan Ango raided Portuguese and English fleets. A French trading post called Petit Dieppe was set up on the West African Coast. This led to the import of ivory and the development of the skilled trade of ivory carving for which Dieppe is known today.
Dieppe is not only a port but also a seaside resort complete with beachside lawns, amusements and impressive medieval castle - a favourite with the English and Parisians.
