Carcassonne tourist information

where to go - what to see - what to do

From the motorway Carcassonne looks like a surreal fairy-tale town of turrets, magic and wonder and to be honest this thought stays with you once inside La Cite or medieval fortified town.  Its strategic position between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean often led to power struggles & conflict and  in 1209 Carcassonne was one of the last Cathar strongholds.

Although most people head to La Cite with its romantic spires, fortification, restaurants and chic boutiques, La Basse Ville is also worth exploring and where you'll find the French playing out their daily lives.  The market square of Place Carnot with its eighteenth century fountain is a particularly enjoyable place to sit back and muse on passers-by.
