Collioure tourist information

where to go - what to see - what to do

Collioure is one of our favourite unspoilt coastal towns (or rather ports) where the mountains dip into the sea against a backdrop of azure blue skies.  It's not difficult to see why Collioure was favoured by artists such as Matisse, Picasso, Dali, Braque and Derain.  Unfortunately there are no original paintings in Collioure today - they are all tucked away in private collections or the Hermitage in St Petersburg.  In order to rectify this, the town has created the 'Chemin de Fauvisme' where you can see copies of Matisse's and Derain's work on the spot where the two artists used to paint.  There is also a great walking tour around Collioure where you can view 20 reproductions of their works.

Even if you arent an art buff, Collioure is attractive town with a distinctive character. It remained under Spanish rule until 1659 when Vauban (Frances favourite military architect) reinforced the outer walls and changed face of port forever.

Collioure boasts a fortified church built right on the quayside, a royal castle built by the Knights Templar, brightly coloured Catalan boats, three sheltered beaches, pastel coloured houses, a market square and hundreds of cafes, bars and eateries.  The old district near the church is particularly pleasant with its steep, flower-filled back streets.

We've spent many an hour in Collioure drinking coffee and watching the locals.  Admittedly, it's busy in summer but this just creates a hubbub which adds to the ambience.  Collioure is also the place to sample fresh anchovies which, due to their delicate flesh, have to be processed by hand - a tradition that's been practised in Collioure for over 50 years.
