Le Cap d Agde tourist information

where to go - what to see - what to do

Le Cap d'Agde is a great destination if you want to enjoy Languedoc's coastline, it's canals, the 'arriere-pays' or inland areas and a bit of history all at the same time.

Le Cap d'Agde is a holiday resort built in 1970s in response to the government's desire to stop French tourists heading for Spain and thus spending their hard earned holiday money elsewhere.  The government achieved its aim and Le Cap d'Agde occupies a revered spot on this stretch of coastline.  There are eight marinas here which will appeal to boating enthusiasts and no fewer than eleven beaches which range from sheltered family beaches to beaches backed by volcanic cliffs, dunes and nudist beaches.

Unlike some other monstrous holiday resorts along the French coast, Le Cap d'Agde has retained a certain degree of charm with building blocks largely restricted to 4-5 storeys.  This is due to the influence of a local architect who stipulated that buildings should be painted white and roofs tiled using local materials.

Le Cap d'Agde is great for family fun and boasts an aquarium, aquatic leisure park, underwater archaeology museum, amusement parks, casino, mini golf and the list goes on!  There are also lots of opportunities for water sports, hand gliding, paragliding, cycling etc.

Three miles from the centre of Cap d'Agde lies Agde (the old town) and this is where you'll get your history fix.  It dates back to the 5th-century with typically narrow streets and privately owned houses or 'maison particuliers' made out of volcanic rock from the Pic St Loup lava flow which originally formed this promontory.  It's here you'll see 'les jouters' or jousting in long barges which is a popular local sport.  The old town also boasts of a fortified church (cathedrale St-Etienne) and museum of local folk art and traditions (Musee Agathois).  A guided tour of the historic centre is advisable.
