Perpignan tourist information

where to go - what to see - what to do

Perpignan has a strong Catalan identity which dates back to 13th and 14th century when it was the capital of the kingdom of Mallorca.  Since then the town has prospered as a commercial centre and is the largest Catalan city after Barcelona and Lleida in Spain.  This gives the city a vibrant, dynamic feel with tree-lined boulevards and turquoise and pink houses adding to its charm.

The cathedral quarter of St-Jean is particularly noteworthy with narrow streets and squares boasting some elegant 14th-15th century buildings.  One of Perpignan's finest constructions is Loge de Mer situated in the pedestrianised centre of the old town.  A late Gothic building, it was designed to house the city's stock exchange and still remains the centre of Perpignan life.
