Castres tourist information

where to go - what to see - what to do

Castres has been a centre for the woollen trade since the 14th-century.  Today it continues the tradition and is the leading centre in France for carded wool and the second most prominent centre for the woollen industry after Roubaix-Tourcoing.  Some of the houses along the east bank of the River Agout started out as homes of the 14th-century tanners, dyers and 'peyrats' or weavers.

Castres is a laid-back, self-confidant town that was home to Jean Jaurès, the founder of Socialism and you'll see many references to this political genius throughout the town.  The town also has some worthy museums including the Musee Goya that houses some of his well known prints such as Los Caprichos.

Venturing out of Castres you'll be spoiled for choice between the Sidobre region, the Lacaune mountains and the Montagne Noire.
