Rodez tourist information

where to go - what to see - what to do

Rodez is situated between the lush Segala hills and the contrasting arid limestone plateaux of the Grands Causses with their strange rock formations called 'chaos' which resemble ruined cities.

Rodez is perched on high above the river Aveyron and like so many medieval French cities was politically divided.  The bishops occupied the CitÚ and the counts ruled the Bourg.  The two main town squares Place de la Cite and Place du Bourg reflect this former conflict of interest.

You'll want to head to the bishops' part first which lies around the 13th-century huge pink stone Cathedrale Notre-Dame.  There are many interesting buildings including the 14th-century Maison de Guitard dite Tour des Anglais which belonged to rich bankers and features a large fortified tower.

For something different head out of town to Micropolis in Saint Leons where you'll find an interactive museum and theme-park dedicated to Jean-Henri Fabre and his love of insects.
