Saumur tourist information

where to go - what to see - what to do

Saumur is a peaceful, pretty town renowned for its Chateau which rises high above the town, fine sparkling wines and the elite equestrian school.  Guided tours of the school and its vast indoor riding arena are available and you'll also be able to observe the elite Cadre Noir riders in training.

Samur is a great base for discovering some of the spectacular countryside which stretches along the Loire Valley from Angers to Saumur.  Rows upon rows of vines and sunflowers meet the eye with cattle grazing lazily in wooded pastures.  This is the place to investigate some of the best troglodyte settlements in France.  The caves which have been cut out of the limestone cliffs are now mainly used for wine growing and mushroom storage although some hotels and restaurants still exist.
