Aigues-Mortes tourist information

where to go - what to see - what to do

Aigues-Mortes was founded by Saint Louis IX who wanted his presence felt in Mediterranean waters.  It was from here that Louis set sail with his troops for the seventh Crusade in 1248.  Aigues-Mortes was the last he saw of France and he died in Tunis of the plague in 1270.

However, Philip III carried on the good work building a heavily fortified medieval walled town that prospered welcoming ships from afar as Constantinople and Antioch.  Today, Aigues Mortes' harbour has dried up giving way to the vast Salins-du-Midi or salt pans that produce half of France's supply of salt.

Take a stroll along the ramparts for fantastic views of the salt pans and the flat lands, relax in the delightful central square or get yourself hitched onto one of the many guided tours of flora and fauna available on the Camargue.
