Briancon tourist information

where to go - what to see - what to do

Briancon is one of the highest towns in Europe.  Since Roman times it has been an important stronghold for France protecting the Col de Montgenevre, an important mountain pass to Italy.  It was later fortified by the military genius and architect Vauban who enclosed the old town with another set of walls.  Vauban's citadel is worth a visit along with the Eglise de Notre-Dame (also built by Vauban).

Briancon may appeal to those in search of history and culture but it is also a major sports centre.  The Ville Basse or lower town is where you'll find a ski lift to the neighbouring ski resort of Le Grand Serre Chevalier.  The Parc National des Ecrins to the west and the Parc Naturel Regional du Queras to the south also provide numerous possibilities for rafting, cycling, riding and other outdoor delights.
