Cavaillon tourist information

where to go - what to see - what to do

Cavaillon is one of the biggest agricultural market towns in France and famous for its melons.  In fact, Alexandre Dumas so loved Cavaillon melons that he offered to supply the library with his novels in exchange for a dozen melons per year.

Cavaillon is situated under the Colline St-Jacques - a hill which offers magnificent views of the Alpilles mountain range and the Vallee de la Durance.  There are some interesting cultural gems here including the 18th-century synagogue which was founded in response to a growing Jewish population.  The Jewish community flourished here despite occasional attacks from Papal Rome.  However, after the Revolution most of the Jews moved to the larger cities in Provence.

Cavaillon (along with Apt) is a good base for exploring some of the prettiest Provencal villages of the Petit Luberon such as Bonnieux, Menerbes, Lacoste and Buoux.
