Grasse tourist informationwhere to go - what to see - what to do
The name Grasse is derived from Grace which is what the original Jewish population achieved when they converted to Christianity.
However, it was Catherine de Medici who really put Grasse on the map when she asked its inhabitants to start supplying perfumed gloves, a status symbol back in Tuscany.
The traditional trade of importing sheep skins from the mountains of Provence and tanning the hides with the use or aromatic herbs fell by the wayside and the perfume industry was born.
The people of Grasse are now known to be the best parfumeurs in the world and there are museums in the town where you can find out more!
Grasse is also the birthplace of Jean-Honore Fragonard, the artist who has a museum dedicated to him. Also of note is the Cathedrale de Notre Dame-du-Puy in the old town where you'll find three paintings by Rubens. The nearby Place aux Aires and Place du Cours are typical of unspoiled Grasse with narrow streets and Renaissance facades adding to the charm.
