Les Baux-de-Provence tourist information

where to go - what to see - what to do

After Mont-st-Michel, Les Baux-de-Provence is the second most visited tourist attraction in France and not without good reason.

Its history is fascinating and stems back to the Middle Ages when Les Baux fell into the hands of powerful feudal lords.  They claimed to be descendents of Balthazar and thus never recognised the authority of the French King.  The steep plateau in the middle of the Val d'Enfer valley provided the perfect setting for a citadel that could be easily defended.  Les Baux's reign ended in 1632 under Louis XIII who ordered its destruction.

Les Baux is also famed for the mining of bauxite and although mining has been discontinued the quarries serve as a fantastic setting for audio-visual displays in the Cathedrale d'Images.  Take a jumper as temperatures drop quite dramatically once inside!
