Manosque tourist information
where to go - what to see - what to doWith the highest density of olive trees in the department, Manosque is certainly worth a detour! It is a medieval hilltop village that has grown in the last 40 years to accommodate France's national nuclear research centre Cadarache founded here in 1959.
However, it still has an intact medieval centre flanked by two 14th-century gates, the Porte Saunerie and the Porte Soubeyran. Just outside the historic centre you'll come to a 19th-century 'hotel particulier' or mansion that is home to Centre Jean Giono - the writer born in Manosque in 1895. Also worth investigating is the nearby Fondation Carzou with frescoes by the modern-day Armenian painter Jean Carzou.
