Lyon tourist information

where to go - what to see - what to do

Lyon is the second largest city in France after Paris and has for the past 500yrs been a powerful centre for the textile, pharmaceutical and banking trades.  The knock on effects of this thriving economy are quite simply outstanding - a range of interesting museums, a dynamic university, first-class shopping, antique markets, varied nightlife, art-house cinema and vibrant theatre and music festivals.

Lyon is also the undisputed centre of French gastronomy.  Ask a French person what one should sample in Lyon and they'll probably wax lyrical about the soft St-Felicien and St Marcellin cheeses or the Andouillettes la Lyonnaise (tripe sausages stuffed with veal served with fried onions).  You'll find these local specialities in reasonably priced restaurants known as 'bouchons' or 'meres'.

There is much to explore in Lyon including Vieux Lyon which is a delightful labyrinth of cobbled alleyways, Renaissance palaces and two Roman amphitheatres which still stage rock concerts even today.  The Presqu'ile is also worth a foray and is the heart of modern-day Lyonnais life.  Here you'll find the huge Place Bellecour with its statue of Louis XIV, the 17th century Hotel de Ville and the Palais St-Pierre, a former Benedictine convent and now home to the Musee des Beaux Arts.  This is just a taster as there's plenty more sights and sounds to be had in Lyon!
