Valence tourist information

where to go - what to see - what to do

Valence is a busy market town situated on the east bank of the Rhone looking out across the cliffs to the Ardeche.  Often cited as the gateway to Provence, its main attraction is the Romanesque Cathedrale St-Apollinaire which was largely destroyed in the Wars of Religion and carefully restored in the late 11th century.

Nearby, the Maison des Tetes is a Renaissance mansion adorned with sculpted heads of the ancient Greeks such as Aristotle and Homer.  Another Renaissance building is the Maison Dupré-Latour which sits proud with its sculpted porch and staircase.

The local delicacy here is 'le Suisse', a crunchy, orange peel flavoured biscuit shaped like one of the Vatican's Swiss guards.  'Le Suisse' harks back to the time that Pope Pius VI was imprisoned in Valence.
